Parallel Realities ends 5 November 2024

Deadline: 5 November 2024. We are thrilled to announce a new collaboration between PEP and Kommunale Galerie Berlin!

Selected artists will take part in a group exhibition in March 2025 as part of EMOP, the European Month of Photography in Berlin.

Theme: Parallel Realities

Originally conceived as a tool to represent the world around us, photography ultimately provides a fragmented vision of it. Its dynamic ability to both reflect and shape reality places it in an ambiguous position in contemporary culture. Every photographic, documentative work carries fabricated narratives embedded in the editing, omitting, selecting processes. This phenomenon, combined with the new visual technologies partly fueled by AI learning, contributes to a growing sense of suspicion by the public towards images.

On the other hand, the status of the photographer as an artist, with the freedom to interpret and recreate reality through their lens has become more and more recognised. With each image that they make, photographers not only capture but also contribute to the very fabric of the reality they seek to depict. This interplay of factual documentation and creative liberty, combined with the influence of the viewer and the context in which pictures are received, continually shapes the evolving relationship between photography and reality.

Where do you situate your artistic practice in this context? Are you trying to represent certain realities that matter to you and that you think should be unveiled? Do you produce images reinforcing or challenging the public’s certainties and representations of the world? Do you intentionally show your perception of the world in your images, telling the viewer as much about who you are as about the subject depicted – and therefore creating alternate ways to look at reality? What is the relationship of the viewer with your photographs? Do they act as a separation or as a link that connects your respective experiences?

Whatever your style or approach to photography, we are looking for works that show the coexistence of parallel realities, revealing the vibrant diversity of the world we inhabit and the multiple perceptions we have of it and inviting to open up and broaden our horizons.

Participating artists will be selected through an international jury of artists and curators. The call is open to all ages, nationalities and backgrounds.
