Portrait of Britain – until 18 April 2019
Deadline: 18 April 2019. Portrait of Britain is an award-winning nationwide photography exhibition, run by British Journal of Photography in partnership with JCDecaux. The exhibition celebrates the rich tapestry of people that make up Great Britain, by turning their stories into public art.
Portrait of Britain is groundbreaking in its scale and its mission. Envisioned as an exhibition for the people, by the people, it is the nation’s biggest photography exhibition and is seen by millions of people across the country. Since its inception in 2016, Portrait of Britain’s following has grown exponentially, and last year’s edition welcomed thousands of entries. With the nation currently at such a crucial point in its history, Portrait of Britain is more relevant than ever – and this year is set to be the biggest edition yet.
The award invites photographers of any level to submit portraits that show the many faces of modern Britain. Now in its fourth instalment, Portrait of Britain 2019 is open for entries.
The 100 winning entries will be showcased across JCDecaux’s network of digital Out-of-Home screens throughout the country, from rail stations and airports, to shopping malls and high streets, for one month in September 2019. 200 shortlisted entries will also be featured in the Portrait of Britain book, published by Hoxton Mini Press and distributed worldwide.
Last year’s shortlisted entries featured newborns and ninety-somethings, nuns and bikers, artists and Olympic athletes. We even saw a progressive Morris dancer. Who will we meet in Portrait of Britain 2019?
Your photograph could be seen by millions of people as they embark on their everyday journeys, brightening up their commutes and embedding your work in their consciousness. The career-changing scale of this exhibition is unique to Portrait of Britain, which reaches across the length and breadth of the UK.
